Govt releases N16.8bn to settle exceptional delays.


N16.8 billion has been released by the Federal Government to settle outstanding salary delays for staff in the country's tertiary institutions. The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who disclosed this during the' Sixth Edition of the Ministerial Press Briefing' in Abuja, said that the disbursement is ongoing through the Federation's Office of the Accountant General. 
The Minister of Education said the government had resolved all the issues and was waiting for the academic unions to call their strike, especially ASUU and ASUP, in the coming days. The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) recalls that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has been on strike since 12 December, while the University Academic Staff Union (ASUU) began on 4 November. 
According to him, the Federal Government has reached agreement in the following areas: Review of the Polytechnic Act; Government awaits the transmission by the National Assembly of the amended document to Mr. President for his approval. Others, he said, were revitalizing polytechnics and educational colleges, renegotiating the 2010 agreements and saying that the government is committed to revitalization. 
The minister also said that the government had directed the finance minister to provide additional funding to the tune of N30 billion for this purpose, with particular reference to polytechnics and educational colleges. " The National Technical Education Board was also directed to strengthen its regulatory mechanism, including the development of a new template 
  He noted that the government team had reached an agreement with ASUU and hoped that academic activities would be resumed without further delay in university campuses throughout the country. However, he commended the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) for calling a strike to allow students in education colleges to return to academic activity.
